Mill Gill Force Photo

The spectacular Mill Gill Force waterfall is very photogenic and when not in full flow it is possible to climb down into the stream bed for a full frontal view.

Photographers should be careful not to burn out the sky that is visible through the tree branches at the top. As usual with waterfalls there is a good range of choice for freezing the water with fast exposures or blurring with a longer exposure. With a thin stream of water as in this photo I tend to prefer the former.

I was able to capture a large panoramic image handheld although this is not recomended - I was without tripod. To avoid camera shake I was forced to a wide aperture to allow a fast enough shutter without raising the ISO, which could cause grain in the shadow areas. This is sometimes necessary with such images in any case to stop leaves blurring in the breeze. I am happy enough with the result and most of the image is in sharp enough focus, I select the the waterfall for maximum sharpness there.

I allowed the green/yellows of the foliage to go somewhere near nuclear but this is the flavour of the place in summertime. Add cyan in post production for more emerald colour but don’t let the water go by stopping your curve before the lightest parts - unless of course you like the blue-water effect that is sometimes reminiscent of cross-processing.
